Idea For Utopian Scene
When deciding on a theme to go with, I decided to create a Utopian image of the future. I wanted to make a futuristic looking city like those displayed in movies and games.

Influences and source images
To get ideas I began looking at difference Sci-Fi games and shows. One object that stood out was the space elevator from the Halo games. This is going to be one of the objects I make.

When gathering ideas for futuristic buildings I looked at shows like Star Trek and FireFly for inspiration. I liked the big, blocky industrial type buildings as well as the tall sleek curved buildings.

Some other media I looked at included Halo, Serenity, Mass Effect and various images located via google images.

Original Video of Brisbane
To begin my scene I first took some footage of Brisbane. This video was later put through AutoDesk Match Mover to create a 3d scene to place my buildings in.

Building Creation
I created some basic building shapes in Maya then began extruding and adding objects in order to create a detailed building.

In these two images the building in the background has various object added to it to give a more detailed appearance.

Textures Applied

Once I had finished my buildings I then created various textures. I wanted the larger buildings to have a rugged concrete look. I wanted the smaller round building to appear more like the sleek smooth buildings like those in serenity. I gave it a white tile texture with many windows.

Problems with Mental Ray
After I put my city video through match mover I then placed my buildings into the scene. When setting up my scene I was using 3 point lighting to check textures.

Once my buildings were in place I then created indirect lighting through mental ray and applied a HDR image.
My goal was to have all the windows reflect an image of the sky. But for some reason I couldn't figure out maya couldn't locate the building textures, even though they were present when using 3point lighting.

Because of this issue I had to use 3point lighting in for my final scene.

Masking In After Effects
Once I had rendered out my scene in maya I then took my city video and maya buildings into after effects. Once in I used a combination of colour keying and masks to place my buildings behind the real buildings of Brisbane.

Using animated masks in after effects
After I had successfully combined the two videos, I then went back into maya and created a few shuttle crafts to have flying around in the background.
